Writing for the Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala board game Hi Dracos! We are coming closer and closer to the closing date of our Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala, the boardgame KS campaign and we thought you might want to know a little bit more about the creative minds and staff that keep everything running smoothly here at Draco Studios.
Today I had the chance to chat with Bernárdo Álvarez, who has been one of the brains behind the stories in the Dragonbond universe. Bernardo has been really busy but he was kind enough to answer a few questions for us and I hope you enjoy his answers as much as I did.
Hi, I’m Bernardo Alvarez, head of lore for Eldritch Century and one of the writers of Lords of Vaala
How did you come across Draco Studios and what’s your role?
I found Draco in a games expo in Mexico city. I was in a pretty bad job back then and I was looking for something else. I was curious about writing for games. They were curious about me and now we’re here. As writer and head of lore, I write all sorts of content, including adventures, I review texts from other writers to ensure adherence to lore and I lead a few projects whenever necessary. I am also part of the narrative development and worldbuilding process for our universes.
What can you tell us about the Dragonbond universe? What makes it different from other fantasy settings?
At this point you’ve probably heard the pitch, so I’m going to keep it short. It is a high fantasy universe where dragons raid every 27 years and the entire world fashioned itself around that terrifying fact. We have this base energy we call Vaala. It is in everything in Valerna, but is most present on anything or anyone whose actions can effect change.
What I like most is the lack of gods. I don’t think we talk about that a lot. The shape of the world simply is and it is transformed through action. Also, I really like the Nwoda. Anything with a flying ship is a-okay by me.
Let’s discuss Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala. What’s its place in the Dragonbond universe?
It’s a weird semi-canonic piece, I think is the best way to say it. It features characters from our upcoming stories, but in other battles that may have been. We figured that we could make it a really cool game and make sure it sticks 100% to lore, or we could make an epic game.
What do you think is the best part of Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala ?
I like a game where I’m not in control a lot. The fact that you can only look so far into the future and that the upside down deck may completely destroy your own strategy from the very first hand is great for me.
What is your favorite fantasy setting of all time?
Well, the Lord of the Rings got me started on writing, but my other favorite is a tight tie between the Witcher and Numenera
And finally, since you are working on a board game based on Dragonbond lore, what’s your favorite board game of all time?
I can never say no to Munchkin or Root.
-------- And there you have it, folks. Our very own Lore master from Draco Studios, giving us all the insights on writing about the Dragonbond universe and how it all ties up with the upcoming release of Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala.
